Challenge:

Vantiva regularly faces the challenge of managing large quantities of faulty and overstock books, including hardcover, paperback, and books with attached additions. These products must be responsibly recycled to free up valuable space while ensuring compliance with sustainability practices. Vantiva required a partner capable of handling a diverse range of materials and ensuring that all products were recycled in an eco-friendly manner.

Solution:

GreenSphere has established a partnership with Vantiva to provide comprehensive recycling solutions for their excess books. Our approach includes:

• Collection and Transport:
  We coordinate the secure collection of faulty and overstock from Vantiva distribution centres, ensuring safe transport to our facility with complete tracking.
• Sorting and Auditing:
  Upon arrival, all books are carefully sorted based on their type—hardcover, paperback, and those with attached additions. This sorting process enables us to efficiently process each category for recycling.
• Recycling Process:
  The sorted books are then processed for recycling. Hardcover books are dismantled to separate the cover from the pages, while paperbacks and other types are processed for pulping. This ensures maximum recovery of materials, allowing the paper to be repurposed into new products.
• Sustainability Reporting:
  Vantiva receives Certificates of Destruction on the recycling process, including the amount of material recycled. This documentation supports Sainsbury’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Outcome:

Through our ongoing partnership, Sainsbury’s effectively recycles over 10 tonnes of excess books, freeing up valuable warehouse space while maintaining compliance with sustainability initiatives. The process ensures that all types of books—hardcover, paperback, and those with attached additions—are recycled responsibly, minimising waste and promoting a circular economy.
